Recent studies have highlighted something rather alarming – the indoor air quality in most homes is lower than the outdoor air quality, even in some heavily urbanized areas. That comes as a surprise to many homeowners, and is one of the causes of serious allergies, asthma and other health problems. If you’re concerned about your indoor air quality, there are a few simple things you can do to improve it.
1. Change Your HVAC Filter Regularly
One of the most important things to do to improve your indoor air quality is to make sure you change your HVAC filter on a regular basis. Most experts recommend changing your filter every one – two months, though high dust, pollen and pet dander levels can require more frequent changes.
2. Invest in a Quality Filter
Not all HVAC filters are created equal. If you’re buying bottom dollar filters, you’re doing very little to improve the quality of your air. Instead, opt for a HEPA filter to help screen as many particulates from your home as possible.
3. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum
One cause of poor indoor air quality is carpeting. If you have carpeting in your home, it can be holding dust, pet dander, pollen and dangerous microbes. Make sure you vacuum frequently. As a note, laminate, vinyl and hardwood flooring are better alternatives if you can afford the change.
4. Air Fresheners Add to the Problem
If you’re using air fresheners to help make your home smell better, you need to stop. While they can provide a pleasant scent, many of these actually decrease indoor air quality by a substantial amount.
These are only a few of the things that you can do to start improving the quality of your air indoors. You can also make sure to use environmentally friendly cleansers, clean out your HVAC ducts and ensure your AC and furnace are serviced properly.
